“If they care anything about the
planet, people are realizing that we’ve
been really wasteful,” said Lorrie
Riley, showroom manager at Bogan
Supply in Pensacola. “And appliance
manufacturers have really taken notice
of all this.”
According to Riley, perhaps the
most wasteful appliance at home is the
toilet. “About a quarter of all the water
used in an average home is flushed.”
While homeowners have focused on
switching to low-flow commodes in
recent years, one company has spent
135 years perfecting them.
“Kohler was the first company to
develop an efficient flushing system;
their first one was made in 1873,” she
said. “And every one of their models
has a water-saving feature.”
Using these fixtures can save “up to
3200 gallons a year,” especially with
their Cimmarron Comfort Height
model, with Class Five Eco Smart
technology. To save even more water,
5,000 gallons per year, their Highline
and Wellworth Pressure Lite toilets
offer pressure-assist technology.
Kohler’s MasterShower Eco brand
showerhead, and handshower, save 20
percent of the usual water used to
bathe.
Delta, a recognized name in bathroom
faucets, “has a shower head with
an aerator we can add. It is purchased
separately, but it conserves water.
Delta has a Leed Program certification,
making them a leader in environmental
design,” she explained. “They also
serve on Leed’s national council,
which offers standards for manufacturers,
architects and designers who have
ecosystems in mind.”
At Bogan, “we’re concerned about

the environment, too,” said Riley.
“We stay up-to-date, and go to
trainings about “green” products.

Riley points to still other areas
of the bathroom. “Kohler’s cast
iron bathroom sinks are made from
more than 90 percent reclaimed
material. The integrated basin and
